I don’t know about you but I long for the day of Jesus’s return. In the movie The Hopeful, the people of 1844 get it wrong and mistakenly believe Jesus is coming back on October 22, 1844. Hundreds of thousands of people sell their livelihoods and begin to wait for Jesus’s return. But when Jesus doesn’t come back, many are left disappointed and wondering if Jesus will ever return.

What happens next is nothing short of powerful. The Hopeful is a movie you will want to take your whole family to see.

About The Hopeful Movie

William Miller’s faith is in ruins. After miraculously surviving a fierce battle in the War of 1812, Miller questions why God spared him. His search for wisdom leads to an astonishing prophecy — the world is going to end. The Hopeful unfolds as a story of a man burdened with the knowledge of Christ’s return. Miller’s message resonates with some—even as it is scorned by others.

When a young woman named Ellen Harmon listens to one of his sermons she is transformed. And through her witness, the message begins to take flight. The preaching grows beyond prophecy and develops into a more holistic vision for how Christians should live and worship. We see blossoming the seeds of a new global movement of faith —the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Hopeful is the true story of a community whose lives were transformed as they learn what it means to truly wait for Jesus. This sweeping drama, set in 19th-century New England, invites audiences of all ages to imagine how hope can change the world.

Review of The Hopeful Movie

The Hopeful is set back in the 1800s and tells the incredible true story of The Great Disappointment and Ellen Harmon (White). This movie begins on a boat with a dad telling his children the story of how the Great Disappointment came about and the challenges Ellen Harmon faced.

In the beginning, we see the story of how people mistakenly believed Jesus would be coming on October 22, 1844. When Jesus doesn’t return, there is a great disappointment and many Christians begin to believe that Jesus isn’t coming back at all.

We soon meet Ellen Harmon, a young girl who soon begins to have visions. Her visions soon lead people to learn how to worship and follow God. Though she is met with backlash from the church, she pushes forward and soon marries a pastor, James White.

Throughout hardship, the loss of her two children, and James’s health taking a troublesome turn, Ellen receives visions for how to live a healthier life and opens health facilities. While her visions for better health seemed crazy in the 1800’s, they were actually brilliant for her time. Ellen spoke against tobacco, sweets, and so much more.

As a Seventh-day Adventist, I’ve read some of the things she wrote on healthcare and, it’s astonishing for her time. You can read them for yourself HERE – https://m.egwwritings.org/en/book/2715.1014

While the Hopeful Movie tells the story of the Seventh-day Adventist, this movie is good to watch no matter what denomination you may be. Buy tickets today to see The Hopeful in theaters ONLY on April 17th & 18!

Is The Hopeful Movie Different than the Movie Tell the World?

I have seen so many people asking the question, how is the Hopeful movie different than the movie, Tell the World and I feel compelled to answer this question. After all, if you are making the decision to spend your hard-earned money to go and see this movie, you should at least be informed.

The Hopeful movie is a shortened version of Tell the World; hence why the movie has the same actor portrayal of Ellen Harmon (White). Some of the movie scenes have just been shortened and a few of the scenes have even been removed. The movie adds a few extra minutes of movie scenes, but for the most part, this is the same movie as the free downloadable Tell the World movie you can find on YouTube.

Why Should I Watch The Hopeful Movie?

I know I should be telling you to run to the theaters and watch this movie now but, due to the similarities of the Tell the World movie, I struggle to tell you to spend money on a movie that you could easily see for free online.

With that said, if you want a shortened version of the Tell the World movie, The Hopeful is a great way to get the whole story without all the extra fillers. It’s also a great movie to take your family and friends to learn about the story of The Great Disappointment and Ellen White. Even if you are not a Seventh-day Adventist, it’s a great movie to watch.
