A 2-Day Getaway to Ohio’s Amish Country

by Crystal Carder
Whether you’re looking to get out of the city or just want a quiet getaway, Ohio’s Amish Country is the place to go. A few days before Covid-19 pandemic took the country over, the family and I went on a short 2-day getaway to Ohio’s Amish Country. The Carder Siblings in Ohio! Though we live near plenty of Amish families now, Ohio’s Amish Country has always been a place we’ve loved. It’s the place Michael and I took our babymoon, a place where we’ve taken our kids numerous times, and it’s the place where some of my family’s history begins.
While we choose to visit Ohio’s Amish Country on a Monday and Tuesday when the town’s vast array of flea markets and Amish Comedy Show wasn’t showing, there were some perks of visiting the town during this time – the town was pretty much ours to visit! No lines, no extremely busy markets, just us and a whole lot of exploring to do!

Visiting Unique Town’s In Ohio’s Amish Country

Ohio’s Amish Country is comprised of three charming small towns; Millersburg, Berlin, and Sugarcreek. These towns each offer a unique experience, but the majority of  things to do is in Millersburg, Ohio. There you will find the town’s only Walmart and small array of chain stores. There is no mall in any of the towns, but there is a vast array of Amish-owned businesses that you’ll want to visit while you are there.

Things to Do In Ohio’s Amish Country

Guggisberg Cheese

Guggisberg Cheese Guggisberg Cheese in Millersburg, Ohio offers a unique experience for visitors. Home of the original Baby Swiss, a visit to Guggisberg Cheese will feel like a visit to the Swiss country. Enter through the chalet building and watch cheese being made, try some samples, and then take home your delicious cheese inspired gifts. At Guggisberg Cheese, there isn’t much to do, but it’s definitely worth the drive during your Amish Country experience.

Heini’s Cheese Chalet

Located in Berlin, Ohio, just miles from Guggisberg Cheese in Millersburg, Ohio, Heini’s Cheese Chalet is an absolute must-visit on your Amish Country experience. Here, you will also enter inside a Swiss-like chalet building, but the Heini’s Cheese Chalet is a lot bigger than Guggisberg Cheese. At Heini’s Cheese Chalet, you can walk down multiple aisles; sampling cheese of all flavors and taste, fudge, meat sticks and more. At Heini’s Cheese Chalet, you can even take a walking tour of the actual cheese making factory. Though it was closed on the day we visited, visitors can still look through the glass windows into the cheese making factory and watch cheese being made, even when the tour is closed. Whenever you’re visiting Heini’s Cheese Chalet, be sure to come with an empty stomach because you are sure to leave home with a full belly of samples and bags of delicious goodies.

Berlin Pet Shoppe

I know what you’re thinking, a pet shop is a weird place to visit on vacation. Berlin Pet Shoppe isn’t just your ordinary pet shop. Here you will find puppies galore and a puppy store where you can literally snuggle with puppies all day, if you wish! At Berlin Pet Shoppe, the puppies are well taken care of and, if you’re not careful you may just come home with a new addition to your family.

World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Only in Sugarcreek, Ohio can you say you saw the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock. Though it’s more of just a tourist picture destination, it’s still worth the short drive to see.

Places We Didn’t Get to Visit, But Will Eventually

Amish Comedy Theater

Unfortunately, even though we stayed in the hotel connected to the Amish Country Theater, the theater was closed on the day we visited. We had heard so many amazing reviews of the theater, that we will be back to see a show, hopefully soon in the future.

Holmes County and Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market

These are just two of the flea markets that Ohio’s Amish Country has and, though both of these were closed while we visited, the buildings of both these flea markets looked huge. Yet again, I hope sometime in the future we will get to spend more time in Amish Country and visit both of these flea markets.

Where to Stay in Ohio’s Amish Country

Ohio’s Amish Country offers a decent amount of hotels to stay in, but we decided that during our visit, we wanted a more ‘authentic’ experience to Amish Country and decided to stay at the newer, Berlin Encore Hotel, directly attached to the Amish Country Theater. Centrally located to almost everything in Ohio’s Amish Country, this hotel is absolutely gorgeous and offers a delicious complimentary breakfast, a large swimming pool, and a gorgeous lobby. While we only got to spend 2-short days in Ohio’s Amish Country, if you’re planning a visit, be sure to leave plenty of time to visit the cheese factories and other sites on this list. Be sure to keep in mind, Amish Country does tend to get very busy during the summer months. Looking for more places to visit in the USA? Check out my travel guides section HERE.
