Unpredictable Hours: When Can You Visit?

The Smith Mountain Lake Dam and Visitor Center has unpredictable hours, so even listing them here, could be a gamble.

We attempted to visit the dam twice before finally catching it open—and even then, we were the only ones there. With no staff around to ask about the schedule, visiting feels like a bit of a gamble. So, keep that in mind if you are visiting, and don’t be too disappointed if you don’t catch it open.

Our first attempt to visit the Smith Mountain Lake Dam was on a Sunday, but the bridge leading up to the dam was closed with a sign stating it was only open on weekdays. We tried again on a Wednesday around 11 a.m., and while the bridge was open, the visitor’s center and overlook were unfortunately closed. Finally, we visited on a Friday morning, got lucky, and were able to explore both the overlook and the visitor center. We really enjoyed our visit, but if you don’t catch the dam open when you visit, you can still see it from below along the Roanoke River. However, you won’t be able to see the backside of the dam.

Why the Smith Mountain Lake Dam is Unique

You might be wondering why someone would want to see a dam, but the Smith Mountain Lake Dam is not your average hydroelectric structure. This dam is an engineering marvel that is both fascinating and functional. It not only provides hydroelectric power to the surrounding areas but also plays a crucial role in managing water flow and preventing floods.

One of the most unique aspects of the Smith Mountain Lake Dam is its pumped-storage system. Unlike traditional hydroelectric dams that rely solely on natural water flow, this dam uses a two-reservoir system. Water is released from Smith Mountain Lake to generate electricity during peak demand hours and then pumped back up from Leesville Lakeduring low-demand periods. This innovative design helps balance energy supply and demand efficiently.

Additionally, the dam’s construction was an impressive undertaking. Built in the 1960s, it stands 235 feet tall and stretches over 800 feet across the Roanoke River. Its concrete arch design not only ensures strength and durability but also adds to its striking visual appeal.

Beyond its engineering significance, the dam has also contributed to the creation of Smith Mountain Lake, one of Virginia’s most popular recreational destinations. The lake, formed by the dam, offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and scenic enjoyment, making it a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.

@crystalcarder We visited the Smith Mountain Lake Dam today in Sandy Level, VA, and it was such a cool place to visit! This dam is massive, and very cool. It features a neat overlook, and a fun, iteractive visitor center. We were the only one there today, but I imagine it’s quite busy in the summers. So, while visiting a dam might not be on everyone’s bucket list, the Smith Mountain Lake Dam is more than just a structure—it’s a marvel of engineering, an energy powerhouse, and the foundation of one of Virginia’s most beloved natural attractions.

What to Expect at the Visitor Center

No visit to the Smith Mountain Lake Dam is complete without going through the visitor center. This visitor center offers complete history of the building of the dam, and the structure of the dam. There’s even an informative video that visitors can watch to see how the dam was completed. If you need a bathroom, there’s even bathrooms inside.

One of our favorite things inside the Smith Mountain Lake Visitor Center was the hands-on exhibits that taught kids about electricity, and even the difference in different types of lightbulbs. The kids enjoyed playing with these exhibits, and I enjoyed reading the history of the dam.

While we were the only people there when we visited, I imagine this visitor’s center is probably a lot busier in the summer, and there’s probably even a worker inside. If you opt to watch the short film inside the visitor center, you probably still only spend 30 minutes or less inside, so be sure to check it out, if you can.

If you’re looking for a unique, educational, and scenic stop in Sandy Level, Virginia, the Smith Mountain Lake Dam and Visitor’s Center is a hidden gem worth visiting. Whether you catch the visitor center open or just take in the breathtaking views from outside along the Roanoke River, it’s a fascinating place to explore. Just be sure to plan ahead, pack a little patience, and enjoy the adventure!
