Looking for an adventure that is equally as gorgeous as it is fun? Then a stop at Blackwater Falls in Davis, West Virginia is definitely for you!

About Blackwater Falls
Blackwater Falls is West Virginia’s most photographed waterfall. At just 57-feet, this waterfall is named for its amber-colored waters – and it’s quite gorgeous, no matter what time of the year you decide to visit.

Blackwater Falls is just a mere 50-miles from my hometown, so it’s a place I’ve visited a lot growing up, but it’s still one of my favorite day trips to make. But I do have to warn you, the town of Davis where this waterfall is located is very small and remote.
There are a few gas stations and a Dollar General nearby but you won’t find a Walmart for at least 30-miles, depending on which way you go. You will, however, have cell phone service during most of your park visit.

Our Trip to Blackwater Falls in the Winter
This was my first time visiting Blackwater Falls State Park in the winter and, to be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It had just snowed the day before, but the weather was in the mid 40’s and it was a beautiful day to get outside and explore.
What I didn’t expect when we got to the park was all the ice. Now, I know this may sound silly because it’s nature, but even though you go down a ton of steps to get to the falls, none of this was salted, so we slipped and slid – a lot – even with boots on.
When we finally made it halfway to the falls, there we found the most adorable swings for photos. Coincidentally, its the same type of swing we found at other WV State Parks.

When we finally got to the falls, it was stunning! The winter ice and snow made the falls look so magical that I would completely recommend visiting the falls in the winter time, at least once in your life. In my opinion, the falls is more gorgeous in the winter. (Don’t just take my word though, check out this photo from the summertime in a post I did a while back)
And, before I forget, since this is a West Virginia State Park, there are bathrooms (not outhouses😀) and a small gift shop near the park entrance. Blackwater Falls does tend to get busy, no matter when you visit, but there is plenty of parking.
If you’re traveling a far distance, Blackwater Falls does have a lodge and is also near to Canaan Valley State Park which also offers lodging.
And, if you’re traveling in the winter, Blackwater Falls also has a sled run that is the longest sled run on the East Coast! We haven’t got to do it yet, but it is currently on my family’s bucket list.
Also, be sure to check out this Road Trip Destination a few miles up the road.
So, tell me, have you ever been to Blackwater Falls?
