Heading to Blackwater Falls in West Virginia, there’s a stop that is almost mandatory about 20 minutes before you arrive at the falls. It’s the smallest church in 48 states and it’s a stop that my parents used to make with my sisters and I and now every time we pass it, I have to make it with my kids. You know, family traditions die hard 😉 and this is not one tradition I’m ready to give up! I love visiting this little church, even if it’s only for a few minutes each time.
@crystalcarder One of my favorite stops on the way to Blackwater Falls in WV, the smallest church in 48 states! Behind it is even the smallest mailing office & you can tour both of them for FREE!! #silverlakeswv #wv #funstops #roadtripdestination #smallestchurchinamerica #familyfun #coolplacestovisit #westvirginiadestinations ♬ evermore – Taylor Swift
The Smallest Church in 48 States
Okay, I know what you’re thinking, there are a lot of places that claim to be the ‘smallest’ all over the country, how do I know this is actually the smallest church in 48 states? Well, the sign says so 😂 and honestly even after looking online, it still claims the feat, so without being able to verify this – I’m taking the sign’s word for it and dubbing it as truly the smallest church in 48 states.
Much More than the Smallest Church
If you’re skeptical this is the smallest church in 48 states, there is one other thing that makes this stop mandatory. On grounds, behind the church is also the smallest mailing office! I don’t think this is the smallest mailing office (anymore) because when I did a Google search, it says it’s in Florida, but it’s still a unique stop.
And, in my opinion this place is probably way more picturesque than the other ‘smallest’ churches and mailing offices in the country, after all, it’s located in the mountains of WV.

Visiting the Smallest Church and Mailing Office in Silver Lake, WV
Visiting the Smallest Church and Mailing Office in Silver Lake is such a unique experience. On almost every occasion we’ve visited, we’ve been fortunate enough to have the entire place to ourselves. And, while there are always signs of visitors, this is such a quick stop (like 20 minutes max) that usually you don’t have to fight people to get some memorable photos.
During your stop at the smallest church and mailing office, I will warn you, there are no bathrooms or trash cans here but you will find a few picnic tables behind the mailing office.
The most unique thing about this stop is the fact that you can walk into both buildings and take as many pictures as you want. The only thing you can not do is walk in the back at the mailing office and walk on the pulpit area in the church – these areas are closed off for obvious reasons.
Before you leave, be sure to check out some of the unique postcards for sale in the back of the church and mailing room.
So your turn, have you ever been here? I would love for you to tell me about it in the comments below.
