If you’ve ever wondered if you could survive after you cut the cable cord, you’ve found yourself in the right place. After years of using alternatives to cable tv, I have found the best alternatives to even the most premium cable and satellite providers.
Why you may want to cut the cable cord
Cable companies keep raising their prices, but keep offering less and less. Many cable and satellite companies even require long contracts that force you to keep paying them monthly, or pay a hefty cancellation charge. Many people have turned to alternative cable tv for watching their favorite shows and movies online and love it. If you are considering cutting the cable cord, find out which alternative to cable is right for you.
You may remember Netflix as a DVD rental company from back in 1997, but nowadays, Netflix is one of the leading streaming service providers worth billions of dollars. Netflix offers it’s customers a choice of three packages ranging from $7.99 to $13.99 a month and, even with the $13.99 a month package only cost it’s customers a whopping $168 a year! Compared to most cable providers, users can save an average of $400 a year with Netflix alone.
Why should you choose Netflix?
There are many reasons users love Netflix, but one the things I love most about it is it’s wide-selection of movie and show titles. Everything from Disney favorites to ABC dramas are available on Netflix.
If you find yourself bored of television and unable to find things to watch on tv, Netflix has an amazing selection of hit tv dramas that you can catch from the start. Hits like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and old shows like, Rules of Engagement are all available starting at season 1.
Netflix Originals. Not only does Netflix offer current hit television series and movies, but they also offer Netflix Originals, and you’ve probably already heard of some of them. Shows like; Fuller House, Gilmore Girls, A Year in the Life, and Orange is the New Black were all Netflix Originals, made by Netflix and available to watch only on Netflix.
What Netflix doesn’t offer
If you love watching your favorite fall dramas during the fall, Netflix won’t be a good fit for you. While Netflix can help you catch up to the newest season of your drama, you can’t watch the current season on Netflix until well after it is over. If you want an alternative to cable tv that allows you to watch your favorite shows during their season air, this next alternative may be better for you.
New users can Try Netflix free for 1-month
Hulu has come a long way since I’ve first used it. Another monthly subscription-based alternative to tv, Hulu offers users everything from live tv to no-commerical season favorites. Starting at just $7.99 a month to $11.99 a month for streaming tv, Hulu is an even cheaper alternative to tv than Netflix; costing users just $144 a year.
Why you should choose Hulu
If you are someone who loves watching the latest season of their favorite shows, Hulu may be for you. Hulu offers tv favorites like The Bachelor, Blindspot, and other hit shows ready for viewing the next day after they air on live tv.
Hulu has a great selection of movies and tv shows for viewers to choose from and they even offer apps so you can watch tv wherever you go.
Why you may not like Hulu
Unless you’re willing to spend $11.99 a month, Hulu users have to watch a small amount of grueling commercials during their favorite shows. If you don’t mind watching the same commercial over and over during your tv viewing, this may not bother you, but I find it better to pay $11.99.
Amazon Prime TV
You may already use Amazon Prime for free shipping, but did you know Amazon Prime includes access to free Amazon Prime TV. At just $99 a year, or $13.99 a month, Amazon Prime can be one of the cheapest alternatives to cable tv.
Why you may like Amazon Prime TV
Other than being an awesome included freebie with Amazon Prime, Amazon Prime Tv offers many kid-friendly shows, movies, and access to thousands of popular movies and shows.
One show my kids love from Amazon Prime Tv is an Amazon Original, The Stinky and Dirty Show. Amazon Prime TV offers a lot of shows that Hulu and Netflix doesn’t.
If you have an Amazon Fire Stick, watching Amazon Prime TV is so easy!
Why you may not like Amazon Prime TV
Personally, Amazon Prime TV works better when used in conjunction with a subscription to Hulu or Netflix.
Amazon Prime TV offers free movies and shows, but not everything on Prime tv is included for free.
Amazon Prime TV does not offer access to most of the current season’s dramas. Some shows also only allow free access to certain seasons, while the other seasons have to be purchased.
While these three streaming services offer great alternatives to tv, there are other options that may be available for less. Before signing up, be sure to double check prices, as prices are subject to change.
