Potty Training Essentials While on the Road

Potty training a child is challenging, but nothing compares to the struggle of potty training while on the road. Long car rides can feel like a nightmare when you’re constantly worried about accidents and bathroom emergencies.

I remember dreading every car ride when my first son was potty training. However, now that I’m on my third potty-training journey, I’ve found that with the right essentials, the process becomes much easier!

Must-Have Items for Potty Training in the Car

1. Lysol Wipes & Spray

Public restrooms aren’t always the cleanest, and toddlers love to touch everything! Keeping Lysol wipes or spray handy helps eliminate bacteria and provides peace of mind during pit stops.

2. Extra Change of Clothes

Accidents are inevitable during potty training. Toddlers may wait until the last minute to tell you they need to go or forget altogether. Always pack a few full outfit changes, including:

  • Pants
  • Socks
  • Underwear
  • Shirt

3. Air Freshener

Let’s be honest—potty training can get messy (and smelly). Keeping an air freshener in your car helps maintain a more pleasant atmosphere, especially after unexpected accidents.

4. Toilet Paper & Wipes

Sometimes, nature calls when there’s no bathroom in sight. Having toilet paper or wipes on hand ensures that your child is comfortable when you have to make an emergency stop. Don’t forget to pack a plastic bag for easy disposal!

5. Blanket or Towel

Accidents happen, and car seats can get soaked. Packing a small towel or blanket provides a quick fix—simply place it under your child until you can properly clean the seat at home.

6. Emergency Pull-Ups

While I prefer to keep potty-training toddlers in underwear, there are times when a pull-up is a lifesaver. If you anticipate being stuck in traffic or in a location without easy restroom access, having a pull-up as a backup can prevent messy situations.

Potty training on the go doesn’t have to be stressful. With these essential items, you’ll be prepared for any situation and can confidently hit the road without worrying about frequent stops or accidents. Have any other potty-training travel hacks? Share your tips in the comments below!
