Every year I giggle to myself and I think about all the people who told me to not get married – and it was a LOT of people y’all. These people insisted it was puppy love and that I was too young to even know what I was doing. And, I laughed. I didn’t listen and, I’m so thankful that I didn’t because getting married young was most certainly one of the best things I’ve ever done.

I’m 30 years old, I’ve been married 12 years and I have 3 awesome kids. My husband and I have had our share of struggles, but one thing is for certain, I am so glad I didn’t listen to those people who tried to warn me because, honestly I don’t think I would be half the person I am now if I had waited and to me, that’s everything.
So while I’m not advocating for teenage marriage, I will say, there’s no magical age to have a successful marriage. There’s no magical amount of time to date a potential spouse (I mean Michael and I dated for 3 months before he proposed) and there’s no one who knows what a relationship is like, as much as you do.
It’s your life and it’s your decision to make. If you’re debating getting married young, I’m going to share a very unpopular opinion of why I’m glad I got married young and you can do you.
We Are Growing Old Together
One of the best things about getting married at a younger age is the fact that you and your spouse get to grow old together, quite literally. You two go from young crazy kids in love to adults with priorities. This is truly one of the most amazing things about marriage and when you get married young you get to experience it a lot longer.
When Michael and I got married, he was 21 and I was 18. He was still just a boy who loved to spend money on toys. But as we grew up together, I watched his love for toys turn into a love for us and because of that I realized the sacrifices he makes for me and my family and I couldn’t be more in love with the man he has become.

The Struggle May Have Been Real, But We Proved We Were Stronger
One of the things most people tell young couples to persuade them not to get married is that marriage that young is hard. And, you know what, I agree. Marriage is very hard. Neither of you have been through college yet, most of the time, and neither of you has a stable career.
There are a lot of money struggles in a young marriage and, for some that may make or break a marriage. For Michael and I, it made us stronger and more grateful for every opportunity that has come our way.
But if you’re not prepared to struggle and go without things that you normally wouldn’t, getting married young may not be ideal for you.
Young marriage is hard, but when you struggle with someone and make it through it only makes your knot tighter.
We Were Each Other’s ‘First’ for So Many Things
I cannot begin to count all the first Michael and I have had together. We were first-time parents together, drove across the country for the first time together, and so many more great life events.
Getting to be that first may not be something you need in a successful marriage, but it does make the marriage a lot more exciting when you experience something for the first time together.
Most of Our Memories Have Each Other In It
Along with being each other’s first for lots of things, getting married young means most of our memories have each other in them. And, one day when we’re on our rockers, imagine the stories we’ll have to tell our grandkids.
While I know this post may be controversial with some, I don’t regret getting married young and I think every relationship is different. But no matter what age you are, I believe any marriage can be successful with these 5 traits.
