If you’re scrolling through Netflix’s top trending movies, you might have noticed The Bad Guardian climbing the charts, and for good reason. This gripping thriller, produced by a West Virginia-based film company, brings high-stakes suspense and hometown talent right to your screen. Coincidentally, two of the top four trending Netflix movies were made not far from me here in West Virginia, proving that the Mountain State is quietly becoming a hub for cinematic storytelling. In this review, we’ll break down the plot, performances, and why The Bad Guardian deserves your attention.
About The Bad Guardian
Starring Melissa Joan Hart, The Bad Guardian is a Lifetime movie that tells the story of a woman whose father is suddenly placed under a questionable guardianship. What starts as a routine legal procedure quickly spirals into a tense and emotional journey as she uncovers the struggles her elderly father faces under the system. Hart delivers a compelling performance, balancing determination and vulnerability as she fights for her father’s rights.
The film goes beyond typical family drama to shed light on the complexities of elder care and the often-overlooked challenges of legal guardianships. Set and filmed in West Virginia, the movie makes great use of its local scenery. Hart’s character works as a waitress at(the former) Jimmy’s Diner in Shinnstown, and her family struggles financially making it even harder for her to fight her father’s guardianship.
My Review of The Bad Guardian
The Bad Guardian was such a gripping movie. I watched it with my husband and kids, and we were completely blown away. The idea that the state could legally separate someone from their family is unsettling, yet very real. Guardianships have existed for years, but this film highlights just how complex and, at times, alarming the system can be. It is eye opening in a way that stays with you long after the movie ends.
I have always been a fan of Melissa Joan Hart, ever since Sabrina the Teenage Witch and more recently God’s Not Dead 2, but this performance stands out as one of her strongest. She portrays a devoted daughter navigating an overwhelming situation with authenticity and heart. Watching her character push through obstacles and challenge the system makes you root for her every step of the way.
There was even a point in the film where her husband and kids got frustrated with her for “missing out” on their lives, and I was literally screaming at the TV. Couldn’t they see the stress she was under or what her father was going through? How could they make it all about themselves, and why weren’t they stepping in to help? That moment really hit me, because it shows just how isolating and overwhelming situations like this can be, and how women are often portrayed as abandoning family when they step out of the norm to fight for what is right.
Overall, The Bad Guardian is a must-watch for anyone who loves gripping, emotional dramas. Melissa Joan Hart shines in a role that’s both heartfelt and fierce, making you care deeply about her character’s fight for her father. With its Lifetime-style storytelling, real-world tension, and thought-provoking look at guardianships, the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat while tugging at your heart. If you’re looking for a film that’s suspenseful, emotional, and impossible to forget, this one should be at the top of your Netflix list.
If you enjoy emotional, suspense driven films that tackle real life issues, The Bad Guardian is definitely worth watching.
