When it comes to eating healthy, I know my kids are not the only ones who could use a little guidance. Teaching a child to make the right choices when it comes to food, is very important.

Not only will they learn from you what kind of foods they should be eating, but making the right food choices starts at home.

With these three simple tips, your child will learn how to make better food choices and what kinds of foods they should be looking for.

Teach Kids to Read Food Labels

Teaching a child to read a food label doesn’t have to be hard, or confusing. Depending on the age of the child, you can explain that a food label is like a book’s table of contents. A book’s table of contents tells you what is in a book, while a food label tells you what is in the food you are eating.

While teaching your child to read a food label, you should always point out the most important things to watch for on the food label:

Serving Size – This is the part of the food label that tells you how many servings you get from that food. Most foods usually contain more than one serving, so eating multiple servings can double the nutrients on the food label.

Ingredients – The ingredient list is usually towards the bottom of the food’s nutrient label, but it is important to note that ingredients are listed in the order from those that are used the most to those that are used the least. One role of thumb I have for my children is, foods that have sugar listed as a top three ingredient are only allowed for special occasions.

Nutrient List – This is the part of the list that tells you how many nutrients, carbs, sugars, proteins, fats, and other things a food contains. I always try to make sure foods we are eating are low in sodium, added sugars, and higher in good for you things like, vitamins.

Monitor Processed Food Consumption

On busy schedule, I know it gets hard to always have a nice home cooked meal at the end of the day, but monitoring your family’s processed food consumption is very important to keep your family healthy.

Many processed foods are high in sodium, fats, and added sugar and are not as healthy as a home cooked meal where you control all the ingredients you put inside them.

It is important to note that while not all processed foods may be bad for you; teaching your child to eat processed foods in moderation can help keep them from reaching for unhealthy foods in the future.

Opt for Alternatives to Sugary Drinks

I don’t like my kids to drink things that have too much sugar in, but I know that drinking water, all day, every day, isn’t very realistic for them neither. That’s why I choose Ocean Spray® Organic 100% Juices for giving my kids that delicious alternative to sugary drinks.

This is great advice – we have been discovering just how bad sugar is. I never thought to get them to look and learn about portion sizes from the labelling – will look into doing that with them.

This is the first time I learn about this healthy drink, and hope it is available in our international store.
Kids sometimes likes to imitate their parents, so I think if parents are eating good foods, bthe kids will follow.

It is so important to teach our children when they younger to make right choices esp when it comes to food. I know that I messed up with my sons; however, we worked together when they got older to correct it.
