Should Christians Be in a Polygamous Relationship?

I was scrolling through my TikTok feed, when all of a sudden a very popular Tiktoker popped up. As I started to scroll through the comments of her latest post, I read that she was involved in a shocking scandal of polygamy.

Of course, that song, be careful little eyes what you see… immediately came to mind, and I felt myself intrigued to find out if it was actually true. As I typed the influencer’s name in Google, the news was confirmed.

I couldn’t believe it. I thought polygamous relationships were something cult-leaders and other odd religons did. Not things that people participated in in 2025!

But as I searched Google, I found even more on polygamous relationships than I could even fantom. Cosmopolitan magazine even had a post sharing about different types of polygamous relationships, and which one may be right for you!

It got me thinking about the biblical story of Lot. It’s one of the most well-known accounts: when God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah due to their wickedness and disobedience.

A lot of people use that story to argue that God is cruel—willing to destroy entire cities and punish innocent people. But what many overlook is what was really happening in Sodom and Gomorrah. When Lot and his family fled, it wasn’t just about the destruction. There was a much darker story about the moral decay and depravity of the cities that led to God’s judgment. The people in those cities were not only steeped in idolatry and violence, but they also disregarded God’s law in ways that were deeply corrupting. When the angels showed up in town, and was going to stay the night in the town’s square, Lot knew how wicked the city was. He begged the angels to come to his house, and eventually they did. But that didn’t stop the town’s people from showing up at Lot’s door that night.

It wasn’t that that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah wanted to connect and make friends with these men, but in Genesis 19:5 it say; And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.” If you are confused, the town people are begging Lot to hand these angels disguised as men to them so that they could have sex with them!

And, if that’s not bad enough, Lot even offers to give them his virgin daughters instead. You may be thinking, why would anyone do that? In those times, offering hospitality meant vowing to protect your guests with your life, even if it meant sacrificing your own family. It was a pledge of extreme loyalty and care. Yet, the people of this town were so wicked that even this commitment wasn’t enough to appease them. They still demanded the men, their anger growing, as they prepared to break down the door. Thankfully, the angels intervened, striking the crowd with blindness before they could harm the visitors or Lot’s family. But the true evil of these people was still evident.

God gave the people of Sodom and Gomorrah ample time to repent, but they chose to continue down their destructive path. It serves as a warning to us—just as the people of these cities ignored God’s commands, we must be careful not to neglect His principles in our own lives, especially in a world where moral values are constantly shifting.

God’s judgment in this story is not just about destruction—it’s a call to holiness, a reminder to live according to His will. It challenges us to stay focused on Jesus and His Word as we navigate a world filled with shifting cultural norms and influences. Whether it’s issues like polygamy or other societal trends, we must live in a way that honors Him, even when society tells us otherwise.

The Bible is very clear that marriage is between a man and a women, and that committing adultery is a very punishable sin. When we live by the rules that God gave us, we live better, happier, and healthier lives. God always knows what’s best, and when you choose to follow Him, you will see that. Remember the words of Matthew 7:13-14;

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

We are called to be among those who find the narrow gate, my friends, even when the choices we make go against the tide of those around us. Staying true to God’s path may not always be easy, but it is always worth it.
