still remember the day I got a call from my mother telling me my sister was at the hospital for a possible miscarriage. My heart sank. I was blessed with three beautiful kids in just 4 years, without any complications and for my sister, she was trying to have her second child. It was something we had all been wanting for her and she had been wanting, but God apparently had other plans. As the night passed, my sister was sent home from the hospital without any sympathy from the ER staff at the hospital. Instead they told her to make an appointment with her OB and it would pass. I never knew how cruel someone could be treated until that night.

The next morning I rode with my sister and our kids as we went to the OB doctor. We talked and we held out hope that she wasn’t really miscarrying, but at the doctors, her OB confirmed what we didn’t want to hear. She was having a miscarriage. Being the little sister, it isn’t often I have seen my sisters cry, but that day, I sat helplessly as she cried tears of pain. Pain from losing a child that wasn’t even recognized and pain from having a miscarriage.

Thankfully, my sister was blessed with a beautiful rainbow baby who happens to be turning 1 today. But, my sister’s story isn’t unique. 1 in 4 women will actually suffer a miscarriage. 1 in 4 women will never get to hold their sweet baby and will feel like they did something wrong.

Up until now, miscarriage has always been a taboo subject, but it doesn’t have to be. Sarah Philpott’s new book, Loved Baby 31 Devotions Helping You Grieve and Cherish Your Child after Pregnancy Loss gives grieving women the support and encouragement they often don’t get.
