On our way to Alabama this last week, we were way too excited to explore and found ourselves at DeSoto Falls on Alabama’s Lookout Mountain in Mentone, AL.

DeSoto Falls is one of Alabama’s tallest and most visited waterfalls and, from the pictures, you can clearly see why – it’s beautiful! This waterfall is 107 feet tall and requires a short hike to get a really get view of it, but it’s so worth it!
Visiting DeSoto Falls State Park in Alabama
Whenever you are visiting DeSoto Falls in Alabama, you should note that DeSoto State Park and DeSoto Falls are in two different directions, so make sure you follow the park’s signs to the falls and not the state park.
On your way to the falls, you will pass trailhead parking, and if you don’t want to pay for parking, park there. If you go any further, you will end up at the DeSoto Falls Picnic Area, and parking there will cost you $4.
Since we don’t usually carry cash, we ended up parking in the trailhead parking which was almost full. From there we were able to take the .45-mile overlook hike which was a fairly easy and short walk. If you’re looking for a longer hike, you can also walk to the base of the falls which is a .7-mile hike.

The hike to the overlook at the falls is a short one, but there are a few things you should know before you go. The hike is a bit rockier and there are some areas where you walk along the edge of a cliff. It’s nothing too intense, but if you are traveling with young children or pets you should use extra caution.
The overlook of the falls also is not marked and only consists of a rock ledge that provides a gorgeous view of the falls.
