Mario and Luigi: Brothership Review

by Crystal Carder

I never owned an Xbox growing up. I am not even sure I knew what one was? During my childhood, I spent countless hours watching my sisters play Nintendo. With only two controllers available, being the youngest meant I often ended up watching them play endless hours of Mario games. Maybe that’s why today I own my own NES System and dominate at Mario and Luigi games. They are my favorite Nintendo characters, and why shouldn’t they be? The plumber brothers, Mario and Luigi, have teamed up countless times over the years to rescue our favorite damsel in distress, Princess Peach. But this year, Mario and Luigi are up for an adventure unlike never before!

In Mario & Luigi Brothership my favorite characters are on an epic adventure on the high seas! When the Uni-Tree is destroyed and the world of Concordia is broken apart, Mario and Luigi must try to reconnect a fractured world, one island at a time.

Before Nintendo sent me this game to review, I had anxiously been awaiting its release back in November. Some the of the reviews that I seen put out there about this game, were mixed. Some reviews stated that this game was the worst Mario and Luigi game put out last year while others stated they loved it. However, I’ve learned over time not to believe everything you see on the internet. I had to try this game for myself.

When I finally got the chance to play Mario & Luigi: Brothership myself, courtesy of Nintendo sending me a copy for review, I was pleasantly surprised. After my first day with the game, I found it enjoyable and engaging. For fans of RPGs (role-playing games), Mario & Luigi: Brothership proves to be a great addition to the Nintendo Switch library.

In this post, I’ll cover everything you need to know about the game, share my thoughts, and help you decide whether it’s worth buying.

About Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is the latest installment in the beloved Mario & Luigi series, blending RPG mechanics with the whimsical charm of the Mushroom Kingdom. Developed by Nintendo, this game takes the iconic plumber brothers on a brand-new adventure filled with humor, puzzles, and action-packed turn-based combat.

In Brothership, Mario and Luigi find themselves aboard a mysterious airship that’s been hijacked by a group of mischievous villains. As they work together to reclaim the ship, players will explore island-hopping adventures, face off against enemies, meet some new characters, and unlock new abilities unique to each brother. The game places heavy emphasis on teamwork, requiring players to coordinate attacks and solve puzzles using both characters’ skills.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is rated E for Everyone and supports single-player gameplay.

Review of Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Mario and Luigi: Brothership feels like a blend of Super Mario RPG and Super Mario 3D World. The game is set on an island, with Luigi trailing behind Mario throughout the adventure. While it’s a single-player experience, it feels like a missed opportunity for Nintendo to create a multiplayer mode, allowing siblings or friends to play as both Mario and Luigi together.

Despite this, players can control both characters, working as a team to execute attacks. Pressing the “A” button triggers Mario’s actions, while the “B” button controls Luigi’s moves. By combining their abilities, the brothers can unleash even more powerful attacks against their opponents, making teamwork a key part of the gameplay.

During the game, there are plenty of new characters to meet like Connie and Snoutlet. You’ll even see some of the original characters like Peach and Bowser.

This game is packed with Nintendo’s signature humor and charming dialogues. During the game, there are plenty of opportunities to talk to other characters on the island and even shop through some of them. While the game looks like it would be a bit easier for older Nintendo fans, it packs a challenge with tricky puzzles and daring obstacles to test your skills.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership feels reminiscent of classic Nintendo games where you journey through various worlds, but this time, the adventure unfolds across different islands. While I haven’t completed the game yet, I can already tell there are plenty of hidden secrets waiting to be discovered. I hope there’s even some hidden worlds to find like the classic Nintendo games used to have.

Whether you’re solving puzzles, navigating obstacles, or unleashing powerful combo attacks, Mario and Luigi: Brothership offers an island adventure that’s both nostalgic and fresh. My family, and teenagers loved this game! Ready to try it yourself, you can order the game on Amazon or get a digital download through Nintendo.

Your turn! I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you tried this game? What did you think of it?
