Planning a vacation takes a lot of work. There are so many things to do before vacation, that if you leave home without doing just one thing, your whole trip could be ruined.
That’s why today I decided to share a simple list of last minute things to do before you leave for your next vacation. This list has helped Mike and I give the kids a decent vacation more times than not. In fact, the one time that we didn’t check off this list of things to do before vacation, we ended up stranded in a snowstorm in Huntington, West Virginia with a broken down car. Our whole trip was ruined after that and, to say we learned our lesson is a huge understatement.
We will never leave home again without doing these simple task and you shouldn’t either!
Last Minute Things to Do at Home Before Leaving Vacation
Put Mail on Hold
One of the most important things you will do before leaving home for vacation is putting your mail on hold or assigning someone else to get it for you.
Putting your mail on hold is super easy and only requires walking into your local post office. For packages, it may be a little more difficult, but you can always track and change the delivery of an item through both the FedEx and UPS apps.
To learn how to know what’s coming in your mail every day, read this post where I break it down for you.
Book Your Hotel
One thing I have had tons of experience in is finding a hotel last minute and it’s not fun. If you’re planning a vacation, do yourself a favor and make sure you book your hotels days, weeks, or months in advance. Not only will you save yourself the stress of finding a hotel during vacation, but you may actually save yourself a decent chunk of money. Since hotel prices are generally cheaper when you book in advance, it’s a known fact that you’ll save more the sooner you book.
Clean and Put Away All Laundry
One of the best things about vacation, not having to do laundry! Laundry is never ending and since you won’t be doing it at all during your vacation, hopefully, you’ll want to be sure to have it all done before you leave. Because when you come back home, you’re going to be slammed with loads of laundry.
Change the Oil in the Car
If you are going on a long trip and haven’t changed your car’s engine oil in a while, it may be best to change it before you leave for vacation.
While you’re changing it, you can also check other fluid levels, tire pressure, and perform other essential car maintenance. By taking the time to check your car, you can help prevent any breakdowns and other mechanical problems that could happen while on vacation.
Make the Beds
Whenever you are getting ready to leave for vacation, I know the last thing you may want to do is make the beds, but trust me – you should always make the beds before you leave for vacation. In my family, we usually get home late from vacation, so the last thing we want to do when we come home and want to sleep, is have to make all the beds. By the time vacation is over, all you will want to do is sleep and relax, so make it easier for yourself, by making the beds, you’ll thank me later.
Get a Pet Sitter
If you have a pet who you won’t be taking on vacation with you, you should plan weeks in advance for a pet sitter. Not only will you have more of a chance of getting a pet-sitter, but you may find out your pet needs other essential vaccines to be able to be watched. If this is the case, some places require your pet to have the vaccine at least 2-weeks in advance.
Make a List
For all the simple things that you can’t pack right away like; toothbrushes, deodorant, makeup, etc… you need to make sure you write a list and place it somewhere safe. I keep all my notes on my phone’s note app, but you can make a note anywhere you want to, just be sure to check it before you leave. Making a list before you leave for vacation can help save you money and make help sure you don’t leave something extremely important at home like pills.
