How to Make Fishing With Kids Fun

One of my fondest childhood memories is fishing out on the lake! The thrill of catching a fish – and reeling it in, was something that stuck with me. As a mother, I cannot imagine not passing that thrill on to my children.

That’s why every summer since the kids have been young, Michael and I have made it a point to take the kids fishing.

Though the kids are older now, I still cherish those initial fishing trips. They were not easy. The children lacked patience for waiting and wanted to throw everything into the water. Looking back, it’s amusing. I often wish my children could be little again so I could relive those moments.

We soon realized that to make fishing enjoyable for the kids, we had to make it fun. It required effort to keep them entertained and foster their love for fishing. If you’re struggling to introduce your kids to fishing, keep reading. I’ll share the simple techniques we used to engage the children in fishing.

it requires effort to keep them entertained and foster their love for fishing.

Take them to a spot with fish

Detectives usually need to put in some effort before apprehending the culprits. Similarly, when fishing with kids, it’s crucial to take them to spots where fish are present.

To keep children interested in fishing, it’s essential to choose locations where fish are active. Many states publish their stocking schedules online, so familiarize yourself with these dates and plan fishing trips accordingly.

When the fish are biting, children will surely enjoy their fishing experience.

Let Kids Hold the Fish

Sometimes even if a child doesn’t catch a fish, kids love just being able to touch a fish. That means, if you catch a fish, let them hold it and throw it back into the water.

I know my kids will personally fight over holding each catch and tossing it back into the water. It makes fishing fun for them and they don’t even care they didn’t catch it because they are just happy to hold it.

Try different types of bait

We learned pretty fast that kids like to move. Having them sit still for extended amounts of time, can be boring for them. That’s why, whenever possible, using different types of tackle to fish can make fishing for kids more fun.

Using things like spinners, flies, and other artificial loars can make fishing more fun for kids. Since artificial loars require kids to cast and reel them in, they help kids have more fun fishing and keep them ‘occupied’ longer, so you can fish longer too.

Though they will have to learn how to cast on their own, using artificial loars keeps kids busy and helps them become better casters.

Keep Plenty of Snacks & Drinks on Hand

Food can make anything fun and that’s why I suggest having snacks and drinks on hand whenever you’re fishing with kids.

Since one of the main reasons for having to stop fishing with kids is them being hungry, make sure you go fishing prepared. Pack a picnic lunch and some snacks and enjoy being outdoors with your children.

Don’t Force It

Whenever you’re fishing with young children, you can’t force it. Kids are going to complain about fishing, or get bored and you have to let it happen.

Whenever you force a child to fish, it can turn them away from fishing. While I suggest still taking them to fish, let them run around the outdoors and find their love for the outdoors and then, a child’s love for fishing will come.

Whether you’re fishing with kids for the first time, or you’re just trying to make fishing with kids more fun, I hope these tips help.
