Financial problems in a marriage can make or break a relationship. The burden that finances can place on a marriage can feel like a thousand-pound chain, dragging down trust, communication, and intimacy.
Whenever you go through these financial hardships in your marriage, it’s important to know that you will get through it. These simple tips will guide you and your spouse through financial problems and help you overcome them together.
How to Get Through Financial Problems in Marriage
Realize financial issues do not mean failure
Nearly half of all marriages in the United States experience some form of financial difficulty at some point. Things like; job loss, medical bills, unexpected expenses, and economic downturns can all contribute to financial hardship, and financial problems can happen to anyone. It’s important to keep in mind that financial issues do NOT mean you are a failure.
Financial difficulties are temporary setbacks, not permanent roadblocks. By approaching them with a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to working together, your marriage can overcome them.
Communicate your feelings
It is completely acceptable to both have feelings during this tough time in your lives. It would be weird if you didn’t. BUT one thing you have to do is to communicate with ONE another – not everyone else – about how you are feeling. Be open. Be understanding. If you do not leave the door open to communication, things will become harder to bare and you need each other as a support system.
Learn to enjoy the free stuff in life
Whenever you are going through financial struggles as a married couple you need to put your focus on something else. The moment you sit down and let all the burden of financial stress hit you, you will fall into a deep and miserable depression. It is important to focus on the things you still have and enjoy the free stuff in life.
Maybe you can no longer go out to eat for supper, but you can learn to cook meals together at home. You need to learn to see the blessings in the things that you still have, the joy in the little things you can do for free. It wasn’t until Michael and I lost everything that we realized how much we loved hiking and nature. When we stopped focusing on what we no longer had, we found a happier, better way of living. Even now, that we are on our feet, we still enjoy the free stuff over paid stuff.
Don’t play the blame game
One of the worst things you can do for your marriage during a financial hardship is to play the blame game. Think about it, do you want someone to throw your biggest mistakes back in your face? No, I don’t think anyone would.
When you are going through a financial burden as a married couple, it’s important to realize how the other person is feeling. No one ever feels good about losing income and it is not always totally avoidable. Put yourself in their shoes and have compassion. Chances are, they will remember how you were there for them through the darkest times. And, who knows, in the future the shoe could be on the other foot.
Love one another and be understanding. Mistakes happen and more than likely, it wasn’t on purpose.
See and appreciate the blessings you still have
Maybe you lost every material thing you ever had. Okay… I know that is a hard thing to go through, but focus on the blessings you still have. You woke up, you have your spouse. Maybe you even have kids, parents, eyesight, etc… Life is not over. A financial hardship is not the end of the world. It happens.
Focus on the good in life and be thankful for the things you still have. Those blessings will help get you both through this hardship.
Remember, financial problems are not a death sentence for a marriage. They are a hurdle, a test of resilience, and ultimately, an opportunity to grow stronger, together. By choosing open communication, shared responsibility, and a commitment to finding solutions, you can not only overcome this burden but emerge from it a closer, more empowered couple.
