Hotel Safety + 4 Tips for Keeping Your Family Safe in a Hotel

I’m sure we all try to stay in safe places when we’re on vacation with our families but sometimes we all pick a hotel that feels a little less than safe. And, once we’re in the hotel, what are you supposed to do?

No hotel is going to refund your money just because you feel unsafe. That’s why today I’m sharing 4 of my favorite hotel safety tips for keeping your family safe in a hotel.

I’ve personally use these safety tips anytime Michael and I are in a hotel, and I know they may sound a little obnoxious but seriously, you can never be too careful when it comes to your family’s safety.

Why I Personally Implement These Hotel Safety Tips With My Family

When I was younger, my parents had rented a hotel room with my sisters and I. We had just fallen asleep when all of a sudden we heard someone coming in our room. It was late, but some man actually got in our hotel room! Apparently, it was a mistake on part of the hotel and the man was harmless, but anything could have happened.

Then there’s the other time my parents rented a hotel in a not so great area in Michigan and we woke up to the sound of gunshots being fired at the hotel.

Needless to say, my parents always warned us of the dangers of hotels and now with human trafficking and other horrid crimes, I try to take every precaution I can to protect my family inside of a hotel.

Never (& I Mean Never) Say Your Room Number Out Loud in Public Areas of the Hotel

I don’t know if you’ve ever thought about it before, but when you blurt out your room number in a public space, you are opening your family up to an unsafe environment. As soon as your hotel room number becomes public information, your family’s safety is no longer secure and bad things could happen.

Think about it this way; psychopaths, murderers, rapist, all stay in hotels. If they know your room number, they know how and where to find you and your family.

Always Stick Something In Front of the Hotel Door at Night

Ok guys, I know you’re probably thinking this women has some serious issues; you don’t need to put something in front of your hotel door at night – that’s just crazy. BUTTT… hear me out.

When you’re staying in a hotel, the ONLY thing between you and some stranger you don’t know from Adam is a simple door lock. And, I don’t know about you, but most of the time the door lock is just a simple twist knob.

Hotel doors are NOT hard to break into. So, when you’re going to bed in some strange place wouldn’t you feel better knowing you have some sort of ‘alarm system’ in place? That’s why I use  a simple duffle bag or luggage bag and place up against our hotel door at night. That way if someone does happen to break into our room, I should be alerted and wake up and at least have a few seconds to react.

Though I don’t recommend piling too much in front of the door, after all, that wouldn’t be safe in case of a fire, but a few simple items that would cause an intruder to fall or make noise when coming into your room can help save you and your family.

4 Safety Tips for Staying Safe in a Hotel

Be Inside the Hotel Room Before Dark, When Possible

I know, its vacation and no one wants to be boring on vacation. But when you’re staying in a hotel, especially when you’re alone, its always best to try to be inside the hotel before dark. And, if that hotel is in a ‘bad’ area, it’s smart to be in the hotel room before dark. Because you never know what kind of characters could be larking around in the parking lot, hotel hallways, or even hotel lobbies.

Use Extra Caution

Throughout the years, I have heard some crazy, insane horror stories about people inside of hotels. That’s why I try to always make sure to practice extra caution inside of a hotel.

Sometimes this means, I only go in through the hotel’s main doors where I know someone else is. Other times, I refuse to open the door for any one unless I’ve called for them, or they can identify themselves – and I always look through the peephole before opening the door. I park as close to the hotel, as possible, so I can limit the amount of walking we have to do to get into the hotel room and I keep any valuables in a safe place and not sitting out in plain view.

There are so many things to consider when checking into a hotel, but ultimately, safety is your main priority and I really hope this post helps you and your family stay safer inside of a hotel.

Your turn, how do you keep your family safe whEN sTAYING in a hotel?
