In this Crossway ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible review, I’m sharing my thoughts on its features, study resources, design, and whether it’s a good Bible for personal study and everyday reading.

There are many times in life when we read a verse in the Bible and think, I wonder what this is trying to tell me? I just don’t understand. That’s where the Crossway Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible comes in handy. It helps you explore related Bible verses, gain a deeper understanding of Scripture, and discover connections throughout God’s Word.
As the wife of a traveling evangelist, I cannot begin to tell you how many times people have come up to me, expecting me to have the same Bible knowledge as Michael. While I know the Bible and have a good understanding of Scripture, there are still times when someone puts me on the spot, and I find myself secretly praying that God will give me the right answer.
That’s one of the reasons I love the Crossway Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible so much. It may look like a simple Bible at first glance, but its helpful verse references make it easier to find related passages when I need a little extra guidance. I wouldn’t call it cheating, but it certainly helps me feel more confident when studying Scripture or looking for answers.

About the ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible
The Crossway ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible is one of those Bibles that looks beautiful and simple at first glance, but once you start looking through it, you quickly realize there is much more to it. It features a premium top-grain leather cover and includes the complete English Standard Version (ESV) Bible text.
Inside, you’ll find a verse-by-verse, double-column layout with each verse displayed on its own line. The verse numbers are bolded and indented, making the text easy to follow. The Bible also features black-letter text throughout, more than 80,000 cross-references, book introductions, a full concordance, eight pages of full-color maps, two ribbon markers, gold page edges, and a Smyth-sewn binding that allows the Bible to lay flat when open.
This edition uses black-letter text rather than red-letter text for the words of Christ. The text is 9-point size, and the Bible measures 9.75 x 7 x 1.25 inches.
My Review of the ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible
I have reviewed quite a few of Crossway’s Bibles over the years, and honestly, every time I get a new one, I think, This has to be my favorite Bible. Somehow, though, Crossway always manages to impress me all over again.
I don’t know if it’s the quality and craftsmanship you can feel in the cover and throughout the pages, or the fact that so much thought goes into making these Bibles enjoyable to actually read and use. Whatever it is, I don’t think I could ever get tired of opening up another Crossway Bible and seeing what they’ve come up with next.

Pair all of that with the easy-to-read English Standard Version, and you have a Bible that is hard not to love.
The ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible may just be that perfect Bible for me. And considering how many Bibles I have reviewed over the years, the fact that I’m saying that probably tells you just how impressed I am with this one.
Verse-by-Verse Layout
This Bible has so many things I love about it, but if I had to pick my favorite feature, it would have to be the verse-by-verse layout. If you’ve read my other Bible reviews, you already know this is my favorite way for a Bible to be laid out. So when I saw that this Bible features each verse on its own line, I immediately fell in love with it.
I’ll be honest, I never even knew Bibles were available in a verse-by-verse layout until a few years ago. Michael was telling me how much he loved this layout and how it made it easier for him while preaching. When I finally got a Bible with this layout, I knew I could never go back to traditional paragraph formatting.
The verse-by-verse layout makes it so easy to find a specific verse without having to search through a paragraph of text. The bolded and indented verse numbers make it even easier to follow along and find exactly what I’m looking for. That makes this Bible great for personal Bible study, but it’s also a layout that works really well for Mike when he is preaching.
The Cross-References
One of the things that makes the ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible stand out from a regular Bible is the more than 80,000 cross-references woven throughout the pages. The cross-references are located at the bottom of each page and are extremely helpful when you want to find other Bible verses that connect with what you are reading.
I especially like having these references right there on the page instead of having to pull out another resource or search for related verses. They make it easy to follow a topic through Scripture and see how different passages connect with one another.
There is one thing I would change about the cross-references, though, and that is the size of the text. While the Bible itself uses a comfortable 9-point font, the cross-references are printed in a smaller size. For someone who has trouble seeing smaller print, like Michael, these references can be difficult to read.

I think this is an important thing to mention because the cross-references are such a big part of what makes this Bible useful for Bible study. They are a wonderful resource, but the smaller print may be something to consider if you have trouble reading small text.
Size and Readability
One of the things I really like about the ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible is the size. I’ve reviewed some Bibles that are beautiful but are so large and heavy that I wouldn’t want to carry them with me everywhere. This one feels like a Bible I can actually use every day.
It’s a great size to take with me to church, Bible study, or even just sit down and read at home. It doesn’t feel bulky or heavy in my hands, but there is still plenty of room for the verse-by-verse layout without making the pages feel crowded.
The 9-point font is also easy for me to read, and I really like how the bolded verse numbers stand out on the page. When I’m looking for a specific verse, I can find it quickly without having to hunt through a paragraph of text. For me, that makes a big difference when I’m studying my Bible or following along while Michael is preaching.
Binding and Cover
The cover of this Bible is another thing that immediately stood out to me. This edition has a premium top-grain leather cover that feels soft, sturdy, and really nice in your hands. You can tell that Crossway put a lot of thought into the quality and craftsmanship of this Bible.
I also really like the Smyth-sewn binding. The Bible lays flat when it’s open, which is something I find essential when I’m studying Scripture. I don’t have to fight with the pages or constantly hold the Bible open, and that makes a difference when I’m spending time reading and looking up cross-references.
The two ribbon markers are another little feature I like because I can easily mark where I’m reading while keeping another ribbon in a passage I’m studying. The gold page edges also give the Bible a beautiful finished look, adding to the Bible’s appearance.
Final Thoughts
After using the ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible, I can honestly say this is one of my favorite Crossway Bibles that I’ve reviewed. I love the verse-by-verse layout, and the more than 80,000 cross-references make this a Bible I can see myself reaching for when I want to dig deeper into Scripture.
I also like that it doesn’t feel like a huge study Bible. It has helpful study features without making the Bible feel overwhelming or difficult to carry around. Whether you’re looking for an ESV Bible for everyday reading, Bible study, teaching, or preaching, I think this is an edition worth taking a closer look at.
For me, the verse-by-verse layout is what really sets this Bible apart. Once you get used to reading Scripture this way, it’s hard not to love how easy it makes finding and following individual verses. And after reviewing as many Bibles as I have, I’m always excited when I find one that makes me want to keep opening it up and reading.Ready to take a closer look at the ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible?
