Camp Mabry & the Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin, Texas, is one of the city’s best free attractions, offering visitors a fascinating look at Texas military history through historic tanks, aircraft, artifacts, and interactive exhibits.

While visiting Texas a few months ago, one place my kids were especially excited to explore was Camp Mabry & the Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin, Texas. We had noticed signs for the museum while driving on the interstate, so we decided to stop and check it out. What surprised us most was that Camp Mabry is an active military base, making the experience even more unique. Getting through the security checkpoint and onto the base was a little intimidating at first, but it was well worth it for the chance to explore this fascinating piece of Texas military history.
What Is Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas?
Before visiting the Texas Military Forces Museum, it’s helpful to understand what makes Camp Mabry so unique. Located in Austin, Texas, Camp Mabry is an active military installation and the headquarters of the Texas Military Forces. The camp has a long history dating back to the late 1800s and continues to serve the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, and other military organizations today.
That means this isn’t simply a historic site that has been turned into a museum. Camp Mabry is still an active military base, which made our visit feel a little different from the typical museum experience.
As we approached the entrance, we weren’t quite sure what to expect. Since the Texas Military Forces Museum is located on an active military installation, visitors have to go through a security checkpoint before reaching the museum. I’ll admit, this part was a little intimidating at first. We had to provide identification to the security guards and wait at the checkpoint while we went through the required security procedures.

Once we made it through the gate and arrived at the museum, however, that initial nervousness quickly disappeared. We basically had the entire museum to ourselves, which made it even more enjoyable to explore at our own pace.
The combination of an active military base and a museum filled with historic military equipment makes Camp Mabry and the Texas Military Forces Museum a unique place to visit in Austin. It’s an especially interesting stop for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys seeing military vehicles and aircraft up close.
A Brief History of Camp Mabry
Camp Mabry was established in 1892 and was named in honor of Brigadier General Woodford H. Mabry, a former Adjutant General of Texas. Over the years, the camp has played an important role in the training and operations of the Texas military forces.
Today, Camp Mabry remains an active military facility while also providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about Texas’s military history through the Texas Military Forces Museum.
For our family, that was part of what made the visit so memorable. We weren’t just walking through another history museum, we were visiting a historic military installation that is still being used today.
Exploring the Texas Military Forces Museum
While we were visiting the Texas Military Forces Museum, our family was amazed by all the exhibits inside. Not only could we read about and see the history of America’s military forces, but we were even able to sit inside an old airplane! The boys loved this part of the museum, and I loved that they actually let me take a photo of them inside the museum.

The museum has a great collection of military artifacts, photographs, uniforms, equipment, and other exhibits that help tell the story of Texas and America’s military history. My kids especially enjoyed seeing the military vehicles and aircraft up close. There is just something different about being able to stand next to these massive pieces of equipment and really see how large they are.

We also enjoyed taking our time walking through the exhibits and learning about the men and women who served. It made history feel much more real than simply reading about it in a textbook.
One of the things I really appreciated about the Texas Military Forces Museum is that it offers something for the whole family. Whether you’re interested in military history or just looking for something unique to do in Austin with kids, this is a fun stop to add to your itinerary.
