Bible Verses About Marriage and Divorce

It seems like the seriousness that should be involved when looking for a husband or a wife is gone. Instead of being the sacred blessing that it once was, marriage is now something that we think we can end whenever it doesn’t go our way.

Society even tells us that we should leave our loved ones if we don’t agree with the way they act. It’s a shocking reality that we face. But did you know that the Bible actually states that the only reason for divorce is adultery? And, if you divorce and marry someone else, both you and her commit adultery?

Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.

-Luke 16:18

God doesn’t take marriage lightly and you shouldn’t neither. Too many times we have the wrong ideas about marriage and we follow impulse and blind passion right to the altar. We base our whole marriage off this spirit of flirtation that we often see on television.

Our idea of a perfect relationship is based on what other’s think about our relationship. It’s not about what God says. And, too often we find ourselves in a loveless marriage because we realize marriage isn’t easy and our partners are less compatible than we originally though they were. Instead of uniting as one, we decide to split up and break what God has made holy.

These verses in the Bible will help you understand how God feels about divorce.

Bible Verses About Marriage and Divorce

Bible Verses About Marriage and Divorce 15

Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

                                                                                             –Mark 10:9

Family, friends, work… there’s so many things that can ruin or hurt a marriage. But God says, let NO man separate what God has joined together.

No matter how tough your marriage may get, remember the promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “…God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able…”

Bible Verses About Marriage and Divorce 17

So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

                                                                                           –Matthew 19:6

Again, we see that it is very important to God that no man separates the marriage that He joined together. This verse even goes a step further in stating that once you’re married, you’re no longer 2, but one flesh. So often in struggling marriages, couples live like they are single instead of living as 1 together with God.

But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.”

                                                                                                                                                         –Matthew 5:32

Adultery is the seventh commandment in the Bible and this verse makes it obvious that God never intended for us to divorce one another. It even goes as far as calling a man who marries a women who is divorce an adulterer!

A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord”

                                                                                        –1 Corinthians 7:39

It cannot get any clearer than this. Marriage is supposed to be until death do you part. And a lifetime is a long time to be wit someone, this just further proves why you need to pray for your husband/wife and earnestly look for him/her.

For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.

So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.”
                                                                                                                                                  –Romans 7:2-3

Again, we read that marriage was designed to be until death do you part. No where in the Bible has that ever changed. Society changed it and it’s a serious offense to God. You understand what exactly adultery is from this verse.

For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the Lord of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.”

                                                                                                                                              –Malachi 2:16

These are some strong words for a God who is love. He hates divorce! Hates it! So when you make the hasty decision to divorce, you’re going against God’s will. The NIV even states; The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect…”

Bible Verses About Marriage and Divorce 19

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”

                                                                                    -Hebrews 13:4

This verse proves what we knew all along, God places honor among marriage. It’s an honorable act but those who choose to commit acts of adultery and fornication will be judged.

I hope these verses help you understand just how important marriage is to God. For Bible verses for when marriage is hard check out this post that I shared a while back.
