Sloss Furnace Review in Birmingham, Alabama

While in Birmingham, you will want to visit the old Sloss Furnace in downtown Birmingham.

Built in 1881, the Sloss Furnace operated as a pig-iron-producing blast furnace until its closure in 1971. At one time, Sloss Furnace was even the 2nd largest seller of pig iron in the country and one of the largest in the world!

After closing in 1971, the Sloss Furnaces was bought up and turned into a National Landmark.

Visiting Sloss Furnace in Downtown Birmingham

Visiting the Sloss Furnace is such a memorable experience. The Sloss is one of those places that can be seen all across the city and you cannot miss the gigantic tower that has SLOSS written across it.

During our visit to the Sloss Furnace, we had such a wonderful time learning about the history of Sloss Furnace and seeing how the place used to run. There was even a place where we got to learn about some racial violence that took place in the Birmingham area.

And, at one spot, we even got to go into an underground tunnel area that the kids and I found really neat.

Since the structure is well over 100 years old, there are a lot of towers and areas you cannot go into. In fact, whenever you visit this National Landmark, you and your party must agree not to climb the structures or visit other off-limit areas by signing a waiver upon entry.
